There's a thread on E90post where a guy installed a nexus tablet into his dash.. It's become sort of common if you want me to pull up a thread on it

Careful, man. That device can easily get you in some hot water depending on your state:
28-963. Television prohibition
A person shall not drive a motor vehicle equipped with a television viewer or screen or any other means of visually receiving a television broadcast that is either:
1. Located in the motor vehicle at any point forward of the back of the driver's seat.
2. Visible, directly or indirectly, to the driver while operating the motor vehicle.

I know it's not a television per se, but just letting you know. :/

I appreciate the warning. My view on this topic is that having an iPad is no less distracting if used responsibly than an in car infotainment system. I will put a disclaimer in my post.

Link it up! I love seeing how other people set their cars up. I did this iPad in car thing over a year ago but I am just making a jalopnik post about it now.

How do you have the cars climate controls integrated into your iPad?

That would be AWESOME. They aren't though. Climate controls are untouched. That would be a bitch of a job considering the controls for the HVAC are manual. The facelift version of my car has electrical controls which may have been easier to do if you used an android tablet. On an iPad it would be pretty near impossible.

Audio output. Do you use the onboard dac or a dock? And it would need to be a 12v dock of some sort. If you externally amplify, and are an audiophile, the onboard dac can be weak.

The iPad is the output, which goes into two RCAs into the back of the amp and that just sends it to the speakers. It's really simple but it works and doesn't give me fuss and that's what I want. Sounds pretty great. The only thing that could be improved is the bass, and that's probably because my subwoofer is very bad.

Illinois has a similar law: Public Act 094-0185, and I spend most of my time after being pulled over explaining to the poor cop that I'm 100% legal. I actually had a city cop demand that I remove my system before he'd release me to continue operating the vehicle (boy did he get a rude education from his boss after I got done).
Basically once you get through all the "may nots" near the end of the law they came to their senses and listed 6 exceptions, of which my CarPC qualifies for 5 of the 6. It got so commonplace for me to get stopped that I actually have a copy of the law on my desktop (1 click away) so I could call it up as the officer approached my car.
Why does my CarPC draw such attention you ask, because its installed in a custom show car. Everything else about the car is "over the top" so I decided the CarPC should be too. Also I'm lazy. I created custom docks in all three of my cars built around a 10.4" Fujitsu Stylistic Tablet PC so I could move the one PC from car to car and my playlist would just continue from exactly where I left off. Here's what it looks like in my Caddy

Can you take it out and put it back in? or do you have to take apart the dash if you want to take the ipad out?

It can be taken out, the wood trim is held in with clips which come out pretty easily, but that really wasn't my priority as I usually leave it in the car. The ipad is dedicated for the car and I have a separate iPad I use. I even leave it in the car parked in NYC streets! No one has broken into my car yet....
I was sort of looking for that seamless look ya know?

I would imagine some sort of servo controlled actuator could be retrofitted as a kit with adjustable variables that could be set at a higher function menu folder that once programmed could simply be just seen as normal climate controls after the necessary calibration. It's too bad I'm not in the industry, some of the past inventions I thought up came out well after I dreamed them up.
